Development Characteristics

Research Capability
Since the establishment of the department, the success rate for the members of staff obtaining research fundings from NSC or the Ministry of Education is 100%. More than 100 projects have been funded since and over 100 articles have been published in SCI, SSCI, EI and other international journals.
Excellent Learning Environment
Dedicated computing laboratory is equipped with Windows and Linux operating systems, high-speed CPUs, and networking hardware and software. It is available as a 24-hour 3A (Anytime, Anywhere, Anyone) digital learning space.
In a most pleasant and relaxing environment, surrounded by flower fields while facilitated with the MathTV digital contents, students are able to share and enjoy their learning experience and participate in the research activities currently ongoing in the department.
Outstanding Students Achievements
The members of staff are enthusiastic about teaching and supportive towards the students, always ready to offer help and advice in their studies as well as in other aspects of the academic life.
Our students are vibrant and innovative and there is a great atmosphere among the students themselves. This is obvious from the diversity of events and activities they have organized and participated, as well as the many trophies they have won for the department.
Many of our graduates have been successful in entering the top national universities in Taiwan to peruse their graduate studies in areas such as mathematics, statistics, information technology and communication, electronic engineering, epidemiology etc. They will no doubt go on to become leading members in the areas of their chosen expertise.

Goals
The Department devotes itself to the development of three areas: probability and statistics, discrete mathematics, and scientific computing. In addition to basic mathematical training, the Department also provides a range of advanced courses. After acquiring basic understanding on all fields of mathematics, students are expected to choose one of the three areas as the field of their major study. The students are also encourages to take courses in other departments such as physics, bioinformatics, economics and electrical engineering, and to participate in research projects sponsored by NSC and the industry. Furthermore, the department seeks to strengthen the students in their programming skills as well as their knowledge on the statistical and mathematics-related software packages, enabling them to compete and apply theories in the fast-moving technical world.

Postgraduate Opportunities
Mathematics is undoubtedly the tool that is most widely used in all applied sciences and in industries. The postgraduate programs provided by the department aim to improve on their analytic skills and logical reasoning while encourage independent thinking. In addition to the theoretical and technical training in mathematics and other related subjects, the students are encouraged to take parts in activities that will help in the development of their communication (languages, reading and writing) skills and improving on their ability in organization and management, impressing upon them an attitude that is conscientious and responsible as well as an optimistic outlook towards their future.

Future Outlook
The Department of Applied Mathematics at NUK was established for its undergraduate study in 2000 and expanded to include graduate programs for master degree in 2006 and PhD in 2008. It is the focus of the department to concentrate its future research on multidisciplinary subjects such as Computational Sciences, Combinatorics and Mathematical Biology with an aim to become a focal centre of research in applied mathematics in Taiwan.
